NEW YORK, February 25. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump is likely to put less pressure on China and Russia than previous US presidents, instead using a more flexible approach, Foreign Affairs said.

Under Trump’s predecessors, Russia and China faced systemic pressure from Washington, as they were not democracies, .

"With Trump back in office, that pressure has dissipated," the magazine wrote. "The form of the governments in Russia and China does not preoccupy Trump."

"Even though the sources of tension remain, the overall atmosphere will be less fraught, and more diplomatic exchanges may be possible," it went on to say.

The US could make some concessions and exhibit more openness to negotiation, according to the magazine.

"Flexible diplomacy - the deft management of constant tensions and rolling conflicts - could pay big dividends" for Trump’s administration, the magazine said. The American leader doesn’t need structures of international cooperation and is able to react quickly to the conditions of the moment, Foreign Affairs wrote.

Russian and US delegations held talks on February 18 that lasted about 4 1/2 hours. Russia was represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov and Russian Direct Investment Fund CEO Kirill Dmitriev. The US team included US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, national security adviser Mike Waltz and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.

According to Ushakov, the delegations had a serious conversation on all the issues they wanted to cover, including bringing the views of Russia and the US closer together and Ukraine talks.
