UN does first meaningful thing for Ukrainian conflict settlement — US diplomat
US State Department Spokeswoman Tammy Bruce noted that US President Donald Trump is committed to solving problems quickly and doing it his way
NEW YORK, February 25. /TASS/. The UN Security Council's adoption of the US resolution on Ukraine has become the organization's first significant step on the way to the settlement of the conflict, US State Department Spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said.
"For the first time, the UN has done something productive and meaningful about this raging war," she said during a Fox News TV broadcast.
Bruce added that US President Donald Trump is committed to solving problems quickly and doing it his way. "Donald Trump’s idea is that you can go to the UN and hold it (the organization - TASS) to its Charter and say, ‘We need a simple resolution that calls for peace without all the other mechanisms that happen that bog down the system.’ And that's what happened today," the spokeswoman concluded.
On Monday, the UN Security Council voted in favor of the US resolution on the Ukrainian conflict. The document was adopted in its original form, the Security Council rejected both anti-Russian amendments by European countries and changes proposed by Russia aimed at clarifying the assessment of the Ukrainian crisis. The US abstained from voting on all amendments.
The adopted resolution is written in a neutral tone. It expresses sorrow for those killed in the Ukrainian conflict and emphasizes the UN's role in maintaining international peace and security. It also calls for an end to the conflict and the establishment of a long-term peace between Ukraine and Russia.
Russia's permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said that the country regarded the US resolution adopted by the Security Council as a starting point for further efforts aimed at a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.
