Poland not entertaining idea of sending troops to Ukraine — defense minister
According to the Polish minister, support for Ukraine will be a focal point at the upcoming NATO summit to be held in The Hague in June
BRUSSELS, February 5. /TASS/. The Polish authorities do not intend to send troops to Ukraine, contrary to what French President Emmanuel Macron suggested earlier, Defense Minister Wladysіaw Kosiniak-Kamysz has said.
"Poland has clearly said from the beginning that it is not considering a scenario of sending troops to Ukraine," he stated in an interview with the European edition of Politico newspaper.
According to the Polish minister, support for Ukraine will be a focal point at the upcoming NATO summit to be held in The Hague in June. At the same time, he expressed doubts that Kiev might receive an invitation to join the alliance, something the Ukrainian authorities are counting on. Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that the decision to admit the country to the bloc should be unanimous, but some member states of the alliance continue to oppose this measure because of the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine.
On January 23, Politico reported that European countries were still discussing the possibility of sending a military contingent to Ukraine. According to its sources, French President Emmanuel Macron met with US President-elect Donald Trump and Vladimir Zelensky in December 2024. According to Politico, Macron hoped to persuade Poland to send its peacekeepers, but faced opposition from Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The talks eventually stalled.
Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier that the deployment of foreign military contingents to Ukraine would be fraught with extremely negative consequences, including irreparable ones.
