Mexican President announces suspension of US tariffs on Mexican imports
Claudia Sheinbaum said that she had a "good conversation with President Trump"
MEXICO CITY, February 3. /TASS/. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that the 25% tariff on Mexican imports imposed by Donald Trump will be suspended for one month.
"As of this moment, the tariffs [imposed by the US] are suspended for a period of one month," Sheinbaum wrote on her page on the social network X following a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump.
The president said that she had a "good conversation with President Trump." She added that during the conversation, Trump indicated how much respect he had for bilateral relations and Mexican sovereignty.
"Mexico will immediately reinforce its northern border with 10,000 National Guard troops to prevent the illegal trafficking of drugs from Mexico to the United States, particularly fentanyl," Sheinbaum said.
According to her, the United States will work to prevent the illegal supply of weapons to Mexico.
"Starting today, our teams will begin working on two fronts: security and trade," the president said.
On February 1, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to impose tariffs on goods from Canada, China, and Mexico. According to the document, duties of 25% are imposed on imports from Mexico and Canada (10% on Canadian energy resources). Additional tariffs of 10% are imposed on goods from China. Canada, China, and Mexico account for a third of all goods and services imported by the United States. In 2023, the combined export volume of these three countries to the United States amounted to almost $ 1.5 trillion. Canadian authorities have imposed retaliatory tariffs of 25% on US goods worth a total of 155 billion Canadian dollars ($106.5 billion). The Trump administration explains the decision to impose tariffs by the fact that the authorities of Mexico and Canada are not sufficiently decisive in preventing the supply of fentanyl from China to the US, as well as illegal migration.
