Total of 17.67% of voters cast their ballots early in Belarus election

The highest turnout was reported in the regions of Brest and Vitebsk, where 19.35% and 18.35% of voters, respectively, have already cast their ballot

MINSK, January 22. /TASS/. The voter turnout on the first two days of early voting in the presidential election in Belarus totaled 17.67%, according to data posted by the republic’s Central Election Commission on its website.

The highest turnout was reported in the regions of Brest and Vitebsk, where 19.35% and 18.35% of voters, respectively, have already cast their ballot. High turnout was also reported in the regions of Gomel (17.67%), Grodno (15.13%), Mogilyov (17,97%), as well as in the capital Minsk (17.20%) and the surrounding Minsk Region (17.72%).

Deputy Chairman of the Central Election Commission Alexey Bashan described the early vote as a "good electoral instrument," allowing as many citizens as possible to cast their ballot.

The early vote will continue through January 25, with January 26 being the main voting day.

Five candidates are vying for the post of head of state, including incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko, who has led Belarus since 1994. His rivals are the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party Oleg Gaidukevich, entrepreneur Anna Kanopatskaya, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party Sergey Syrankov, and leader of the Republican Party of Labor and Justice Alexander Khizhnyak.

More than 6.9 mln Belarusian voters are eligible to participate in these elections.
