The German chancellor also said Europe and the US have a long history of friendship and partnership

BERLIN, January 22. /TASS/. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the new US President Donald Trump will be a challenge for Europe.

"Very recently, this week, we got a new US administration. President Trump, as is now clear, will be a challenge," Scholz said at a joint news conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.

He also said Europe and the US have a long history of friendship and partnership. "We are building relations on this solid foundation," the chancellor stated.

Trump already made or announced some decisions that can be studied, according to the German official.

"Of course, we will carefully analyze them together with our European partners," Scholz said.

Scholz mentioned that Europe is a large economic space with about 450 million people.

"Europe will not hide and shrink, but will be a constructive and confident partner. On this basis, we will cooperate fruitfully with the United States and the new American president," the chancellor said.

According to Scholz, over the past few years, Europeans together have done much to strengthen NATO's European pillar. Defense spending, Scholz noted, is rising in almost all European countries.

Republican President Trump took office on January 20.
