STOCKHOLM, December 23. /TASS/. US President-elect Donald Trump's comment on the significant importance of owning and controlling Greenland is "extremely inappropriate" and suggests that Trump intends to "purchase" the island, Greenlandic MP Aaja Chemnitz from the Inuit Ataqatigiit party said.

"Greenland is still not for sale," the Ritzau news agency quoted the politician as saying. "I believe the terms ‘ownership’ and ‘control,’ used by the next US president, who shapes the foreign and security policy of the entire West, send a clear signal that they intend to buy Greenland. It is also disrespectful for Danish politicians to claim that this decision rests solely with Denmark," the politician added.

However, Chemnitz is not averse to enhanced cooperation with the US. She cites the opening of an American consulate in Greenland as an example. Nevertheless, the island's residents do not wish to become part of the United States, the MP emphasized.

"This decision lies with Greenland and its people," she added. "We have expanded self-government in the country, and, as far as I know, no party in Greenland supports the idea of becoming American citizens," Chemnitz explained.

Earlier, US President-elect Donald Trump said Washington needs to control Greenland. "For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity. Ken will do a wonderful job in representing the interests of the United States," he wrote on Truth Social.

During Trump's first presidential term in 2019, American media reported his interest in acquiring Greenland, a territory within Denmark which has the rights of broad autonomy. The kingdom's authorities then refused to discuss the sale, dismissing the idea as preposterous.
