US not to 'abandon' Ukraine, Trump says

The US president-elect added that if he had been still in office in 2022, the special military operation would not have started "for numerous reasons"

NEW YORK, December 12. /TASS/. US President-elect Donald Trump stated in an interview with Time magazine that Washington would continue to support Kiev, emphasizing that such assistance is essential for achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

"I want to reach an agreement, and the only way you're going to reach an agreement is not to abandon [Ukraine]," Trump told Time in an interview, when asked if the US would leave Kiev without support when he takes office.

In response to an interviewer's remark that the president-elect's words weren't clear enough, Trump explained that "you can't reach an agreement if you abandon [a country without support]." However, he immediately added that he disagrees "with the whole thing, because it should have never happened."

He added that if he was still in office in 2022, the special military operation would not have started "for numerous reasons," a position he has repeatedly voiced before.

Time named Trump Person of the Year on Thursday, with the interview timed to coincide with the announcement.
