PARIS, December 12. /TASS/. French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to appoint the country’s new prime minister on Thursday, the Les Echos newspaper wrote citing a source.

According to the report, the announcement may be made on Thursday afternoon, when the president returns from his brief trip to Poland.

Among possible candidates, Les Echos named 73-year-old Francois Bayrou, the leader of the centrist Democratic Movement (MoDem) party; 38-year-old Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu and Bernard Cazeneuve, 61, who served as prime minister during the final months of socialist Francois Hollande’s presidency.

On December 4, the National Assembly, or the lower house of the French parliament, voted on a motion of no-confidence against the government of Michel Barnier following his controversial decision to sidestep a parliamentary vote on next year’s social security budget.

The motion received support from 331 lawmakers. The French prime minister will now have to resign. The Barnier-led government has served a term of just 90 days, the shortest in the history of the French Republic.
