NEW YORK, December 4. /TASS/. Many European countries are quietly preparing for World War III in light of the alleged security threat posed by Russia, Newsweek reported.
According to the magazine, European NATO countries have already begun to lay the groundwork for defense, believing that Russia could attack the alliance. The bloc seeks to prepare both for a potential full-scale war and other possible scenarios of the conflict. Europe’s preparation for war with Russia is visible through increased defense spending in certain countries, the article says.
As part of these preparations, the Baltic states are intensively reinforcing their ground border with Russia and building bomb shelters. Scandinavian countries are distributing leaflets with mass evacuation plans, and Germany has started developing plans for the protection of important buildings and landmarks in Berlin in the event of an attack. The latter also signaled its readiness to act as an entry point for hundreds of thousands of troops, ready to be sent to Eastern Europe.
On October 3, Andrius Kubilius, then-future European Commissioner for defense and space, told Bloomberg that the European Union should ramp up its military potential for a potential standoff with Russia, which he considers likely in six to eight years.
