Another anti-government rally being held in Tbilisi
Prior to the rally, students marched along the central streets to the rally site
TBILISI, December 2. /TASS/. Several thousand people have gathered in front of the parliamentary building in downtown Tbilisi for another anti-government rally, a TASS correspondent reported from the site.
The demonstrators have blocked traffic along Rustaveli Avenue in the vicinity of the parliamentary building. They are holding Georgian and EU flags, as well as posters demanding the resignation of the government and rerun parliamentary elections.
Prior to the rally, students marched along the central streets to the rally site.
Reinforced police units have been deployed to the area. No riot police or anti-riot vehicles are seen so far. No clashes between the protesters and police have been reported as pf yet.
The current wave of protests was sparked by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze's statement on November 28 when he said that the ruling Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia party had decided to postpone any talk about launching accession negotiations until late 2028 and decline any funding from the European Union. According to the premier, the decision comes after repeated attempts by the EU to blackmail Georgia with promises of launching the talks in exchange for Tbilisi revoking certain laws passed by the country’s parliament.
