Turkey ready to contribute to settlement in Syria — foreign minister
Hakan Fidan considers any external interference in Syria as a response to the escalation to be wrong at this stage, calling such attempts a "delusion of those unwilling to understand the realities of Syria"
ISTANBUL, December 2. /TASS/. Turkey is ready to contribute to a settlement in Syria and, at the same time, considers any external interference in the country’s situation misguided, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said following talks with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Ankara.
"The latest events once again show that Damascus must reconcile with both its people and the legitimate political opposition of Syria. Turkey is ready to make all necessary contributions to achieving this goal. Together with Iran, we have already made valuable progress during meetings in the Astana format, and we will continue to cooperate with this country. Turkey has always supported and will continue to support the territorial integrity and unity of Syria," the Turkish foreign minister said following the talks, broadcast live on the Turkish Foreign Ministry's social media channels.
Fidan considers any external interference in Syria as a response to the escalation to be wrong at this stage, calling such attempts a "delusion of those unwilling to understand the realities of Syria." "The reason for the renewed clashes in Syria is that the country’s interrelated problems have remained unresolved for over 13 years," Fidan added.
The Turkish foreign minister also emphasized that Ankara will not allow terrorist organizations to exploit the situation. "Our [security] agencies are monitoring the situation in Syria around the clock and taking all necessary measures to prevent any potential issues," he said.
