Sending EU troops to Ukraine to make peace settlement impossible — Austrian lawmaker
Harald Vilimsky noted that the joint deployment of European troops will further escalate the security situation in Europe
VIENNA, November 29. /TASS/. If Europe sends its troops to Ukraine, it will make it impossible to resolve the conflict diplomatically, the European Union should avoid getting involved in hostilities, Harald Vilimsky, a member of the European Parliament from the Freedom Party of Austria, said.
"The EU should not allow a military intervention in this conflict. The joint deployment of European troops will further escalate the security situation in Europe and put states like Austria, which adheres to eternal neutrality, in an intolerable situation," the political party’s press service quoted him as saying.
In his opinion, sending European contingents to the territory of Ukraine "will finally destroy the chances for a diplomatic solution" to the conflict.
"The EU should focus on acting as a mediator for a peaceful solution, rather than becoming a party to the conflict. A viable solution can only be achieved through dialogue and negotiation. Austria must not allow itself to be drawn into military conflicts," Vilimsky emphasized.
On Monday, France’s Le Monde newspaper reported that European countries have resumed discussions on the possibility of sending troops or fighters from private military companies to Ukraine. This is due to the possible withdrawal of the United States from supporting Ukraine after Donald Trump's accession to the US presidency on January 20, 2025. According to the newspaper, the talks resumed after the visit of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to France on November 11.
