CSTO aims to develop cooperation with UN on peacekeeping — statement
The CSTO foreign ministers noted the development of effective relations between the two organizations and reaffirmed their commitment to common goals in ensuring peace and regional security
MOSCOW, November 28. /TASS/. The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) aims at effective participation in global peacekeeping efforts and development of practical interaction with the UN in this direction, the CSTO foreign ministers said in a joint statement on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the UN General Assembly granting the organization observer status.
"We emphasize the importance of the CSTO's effective participation in global peacekeeping efforts and focus on the development of practical cooperation between the CSTO and the UN on peacekeeping issues. We confirm the continuation of the line on deepening cooperation between the organization and the UN profile bodies on the basis of relevant memorandums and protocols," the document posted on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website said.
The CSTO foreign ministers noted the development of effective relations between the two organizations and reaffirmed their commitment to common goals in ensuring peace and regional security, conflict prevention and resolution, countering challenges and threats such as international terrorism, illicit trafficking of drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors, weapons, organized transnational crime, illegal migration, combating natural and man-made disasters.
"We support the holding of regular consultations between the UN Secretary General and the CSTO Secretary General. We declare readiness to further develop the CSTO's potential, strengthen its coordination and cooperation with the UN in areas of mutual interest, in addition to the world organization's efforts to maintain international peace and security," the statement said.
