Ukraine requests to buy weapons from South Korea — TV
The South Korean government had "no enthusiasm" about the proposal, the report says
SEOUL, November 28. /TASS/. A special delegation led by Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov was sent by Vladimir Zelensky to Seoul to negotiate a purchase of weapons from South Korean defense companies, the SBS television reported.
The South Korean government had "no enthusiasm" about the proposal, the report says.
On Wednesday, Umerov met with President Yoon Suk Yeol and National Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun. During the visit, it became known that Ukraine was willing to pay for weapons and ammunition, and did not insist on receiving them free of charge.
According to SBS, Ukraine was particularly interested in KM-SAM (Korean Medium-range Surface-to-Air Missile or Cheon-gung) systems, along with radars for air defense and counter-battery warfare.
Ukraine reached out to a number of South Korean defense companies, signaling its readiness to buy weapons. However, the National Defense Ministry gave instructions to refrain from unauthorized contacts. Moscow has repeatedly warned that arms supplies to Ukraine will destroy bilateral relations.
SBS reported that US President-elect Donald Trump’s declared intention to resolve the conflict as soon as possible could be among factors that constrain South Korea’s military cooperation with Kiev. Apart from that, the Republic of Korea’s stockpiles of KM-SAM systems, K2 tanks and K9 self-propelled howitzers are not large enough for exports.
