Palestinian president issues constitutional document on his possible successor
In accordance with the document, his duties should be temporarily assumed by the chairman of the country’s parliament
CAIRO, November 28. /TASS/. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has issued a constitutional declaration outlining what the transition of power will look like if he resigns, dies or becomes legally incapable, the WAFA news agency reported.
The declaration, published by WAFA, says that "if the post of the President of the Palestinian Authority (PA) becomes vacant," his duties should be temporarily assumed by the chairman of the country’s parliament, the Palestinian National Council. The post is currently held by Rawhi Fattouh.
In accordance with the document, the speaker will perform presidential duties for no more than 90 days. During this period, presidential elections are to be held. The period can be extended by another 90 days "if elections could not be held during that period owing to force majeure," but such an extension is possible only once.
