Hamas will continue to fight "for the Palestinian people being oppressed [by Israel]," Basem Naim said

ROME, November 27. /TASS/. Hamas does not feel betrayed now that Israel and the Lebanon-based Shia group Hezbollah have reached a ceasefire deal, and it endorses the agreement, Basem Naim, a member of the Palestinian radical movement’s Politburo, told La Repubblica in an interview.

According to him, no agreement with Lebanon, Yemen, or Iran will bring lasting peace to the region until the Palestinian issue is resolved. "The Hezbollah organization did not make the decision unilaterally. If the Lebanese people have decided that it is in their interest to reach an agreement with Israel, we accept that. Our goal was not to allow Israel to destroy Lebanon," the Hamas official explained.

Hamas will continue to fight "for the Palestinian people being oppressed [by Israel]," Naim said. The movement will also be prepared to withdraw if the presence of its members, who Hamas hopes will eventually join the Palestine Liberation Organization, obstructs the country’s recovery once the conflict ends, he added. "We will propose a technical government <...> that will focus on specific civilian tasks," Naim stated.

The situation in the Middle East "cannot be worse than under [outgoing US President Joe] Biden," the Hamas Politburo member noted. "[US President-elect Donald] Trump has pledged to put an end to the wars," Naim emphasized, who sat for the interview with the Italian newspaper in Istanbul.

On November 26, the Israeli war cabinet approved a plan for a ceasefire in Lebanon. Soon after, Biden announced that agreements between Israel and Hezbollah include provisions for Lebanese forces regaining control over their territory within 60 days. Then the Israeli military will begin a gradual withdrawal from the Arab republic, while civilians from both sides will be able to safely return to their homes and begin rebuilding them.
