Austria ready to host Ukraine talks — chancellor
According to reports, US president-elect Donald Trump mentioned Nehammer's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which took place shortly after the start of the special military operation in Ukraine
VIENNA, November 26. /TASS/. Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer expressed his country's readiness to provide a venue for peace talks on the Ukrainian conflict in a telephone conversation with US President-elect Donald Trump, the ORF TV channel reported citing the chancellor's press service.
According to reports, Trump mentioned Nehammer's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which took place shortly after the start of the special military operation in Ukraine. The president-elect expressed great interest in finding a way to end the Ukrainian conflict. Nehammer reaffirmed Austria's readiness to serve as a platform for international peace talks, the press service stated.
According to a Gallup poll released on November 19, 52% of Ukrainians favor holding peace talks with Russia, twice as many as one year ago. The results reveal the Ukrainian public’s growing fatigue with the conflict amid the successes of the Russian military on the frontline and doubts about whether the US will continue to supply aid once Trump takes office in January.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at a Valdai International Discussion Club session, stated that Moscow was open to peace talks on Ukraine, but not on the basis of Kiev's "wish lists." The president emphasized that negotiations should be grounded in the agreements made in Istanbul, but adapted to today's realities. The Russian and Ukrainian delegations met in Istanbul on March 29, 2022.
The principles of the future agreement included commitments on Ukraine's neutral, non-aligned status and its refusal to deploy foreign weapons, including nuclear ones, on the country's territory.
