Lithuania open to sending European troops to Ukraine — foreign minister
"It may become necessary for European soldiers to be deployed on Ukrainian soil, and Lithuania is always ready to consider such options," Gabrielius Landsbergis stated
VILNIUS, November 26. /TASS/. Lithuania is open to discussing scenarios involving the deployment of European servicemen to Ukraine, Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis stated.
"We must remain open to the proposals put forward by [French President Emmanuel] Macron. <...> It may become necessary for European soldiers to be deployed on Ukrainian soil, and Lithuania is always ready to consider such options," he stated during a joint press conference with his Estonian counterpart, Margus Tsahkna.
After a conference on Ukraine in Paris on February 26 that involved delegates from around 20 Western nations, French President Emmanuel Macron said that the participants had considered sending ground troops to Ukraine. Although no consensus was reached, he left the door open for such a scenario in the future.
Later, he revisited the idea of sending troops to Ukraine, saying that if Kiev requests this, or if Russian forces break through the front lines, it could not be ruled out. Le Monde later reported that Macron is aiming to form a coalition within the EU dedicated to sending instructors to Ukraine. On November 25, the newspaper also reported that European countries had resumed discussions regarding the potential deployment of troops or private military company (PMC) personnel to Ukraine.
Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said back then that the deployment of foreign military contingents to Ukraine would lead to grave consequences.
