TBILISI, November 26. /TASS/. The parliament of the South Caucasus republic of Georgia has passed a draft resolution on holding the next presidential election for December 14, according to the parliamentary session broadcast live on the legislature’s website on Tuesday.

"Eighty MPs voted in favor, with no votes against it. The resolution was adopted," Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili announced after the vote.

The inauguration of the newly elected president will take place on December 29, according to the parliament's resolution.

Presidential elections are proposed to be held on December 14, with the inauguration set for December 29, Papuashvili had earlier said at a meeting of the Parliament bureau.

It is the first time the president of Georgia will not be elected by a direct popular vote. The head of state will be chosen by a college of 300 electors. The college will include all 150 members of the Georgian Parliament, representatives of the Supreme Councils of Adjara and Abkhazia, as well as deputies from local authorities. A group of at least 30 electors has the right to nominate its own presidential candidate. The elections will be held by the Central Electoral Commission of Georgia in the Parliament building.

The ruling Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia party plans to nominate a presidential candidate in the near future.

The newly formed Georgian Parliament began its work after the October 26 parliamentary elections. Only 88 MPs from the ruling Georgian Dream — Democratic Georgia party were present in the session hall as members of opposition parties refused to recognize the election results and announced their decision to boycott the legislature. Georgia's incumbent president, Salome Zourabichvili, was elected for a six-year term in 2018 by direct vote as an exception.

From now on, the Georgian president will be elected for a five-year term.
