Georgia seeks to 'reset' relations with the US — candidate
Washington-Tbilisi relations began to deteriorate after the Georgian parliament passed the law on foreign agents in May
TBILISI, November 26. /TASS/. The government of the South Caucasus republic of Georgia values its relations with the United States and seeks to 'reset' them, Maka Bochorishvili, a candidate for the post of Georgian foreign minister, said.
"Strategic partnership with Washington is especially important for the Georgian government. We consider all areas defined by the charter on strategic partnership to be our priority. Our task is to reset US-Georgia relations, which implies the restoration of equal and fair relations in all areas, the renewal of full cooperation beneficial for both parties, and its enhancement," Bochorishvili said, speaking at a joint meeting of parliamentary committees on the approval of Georgia’s new government.
Washington-Tbilisi relations began to deteriorate after the Georgian parliament passed the law on foreign agents in May. On July 5, the US Department of Defense announced that the joint US-Georgia military exercises Noble Partner, scheduled for the summer of 2024, had been postponed indefinitely due to a reconsideration of strategic relations. The US Department of Defense justified the decision by citing statements from Georgian authorities about attempts by the US and the West to open a "second front" to increase pressure on Russia concerning the situation in Ukraine. The US claimed that such statements were false.
