Lebanon wary of reports of potential ceasefire with Israel
Beirut is cautious for now because it is dealing with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "and all previous deals with him have failed," Lebanese Parliament Deputy Speaker Elias Bou Saab pointed out
BEIRUT, November 26. /TASS/. Beirut is cautious about a possible ceasefire agreement with Israel, Lebanese Parliament Deputy Speaker Elias Bou Saab said.
"We have received a message from the American mediator [Amos Hochstein] that the differences on all points of the future agreement have been overcome," he told reporters in Beirut. "But we are cautious for now because we are dealing with [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu and all previous deals with him have failed," the lawmaker pointed out.
According to him, "Lebanese political forces will welcome the end of the aggression and the withdrawal of Israeli troops to the 1949 ceasefire line." "We hope to witness the cessation of hostilities in the coming hours or days," he said.
Earlier, the Al Jadeed TV channel reported that the announcement of a 60-day ceasefire could be made on Wednesday, November 27, by Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati. The head of government himself refused to confirm this information, noting that he "prefers not to comment while negotiations are underway." According to the Al Nahar newspaper sources, US President Joe Biden and his and French counterpart Emmanuel Macron may issue a statement on the agreement as early as Tuesday, after the Israeli government approves the draft agreement at its meeting.
