Georgia’s 11th parliament, formed based on the results of the October 26 parliamentary elections, began performing its duties on Monday. The opposition planned to disrupt the session by gathering its supporters at a rally late on November 24. The protesters spent the night outside the parliament building, but it was to no avail, as many law enforcement officials were present.
Georgians participated in the parliamentary elections on October 26, marking the country's first elections using electronic ballot boxes. The Central Electoral Commission finally reported that the ruling Georgian Dream party received 53.93% of the vote, securing 89 mandates out of 150. Four opposition parties surpassed the five-percent threshold: the Coalition for Change (garnered 11.03% and 19 mandates), the United National Movement (received 10.17% and 16 mandates), the Strong Georgia coalition (obtained 8.81% and 14 mandates), and the Gakharia For Georgia party (achieved 7.78% and 12 mandates). All opposition parties have refused to acknowledge the election results. Opposition leaders have been holding protests in Georgia since November 4.
