Opposition holds rally in Georgian capital to protest election outcome
The rally is attended by people that came from the country’s regions by car
TBILISI, November 24. /TASS/. Members of opposition parties, their supporters and civil activists are holding a rally on Republic Square in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi against the outcome of last month’s parliamentary election, according to a TASS reporter at the scene.
Most of the protesters gathered right at Republic Square, while some others marched in processions from various neighborhoods before they reached the square. The rally is attended by people that came from the country’s regions by car.
The protesters plan to stay in front of the parliament for the night so they can attempt to prevent newly-elected lawmakers from holding the first session of the new parliament on Monday.
Georgia held its parliamentary election on October 26. According to the country’s Central Electoral Commission, the ruling Georgian Dream — Democratic Georgia party secured 54% of the vote, winning 89 seats out of a total of 150. Four opposition parties surpassed the five-percent election threshold: the Coalition for Change (11%), the Unity — National Movement (10%), the Strong Georgia coalition (9%), and the Gakharia For Georgia party (8%) to win seats in parliament. All of the opposition parties that made it to parliament refused to recognize the outcome of the elections, as they believe the vote was rigged. Protests started on November 4.
