US should assist ICC in arresting Netanyahu — Columbian president
Earlier on Thursday, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Palestine
HAVANA, November 21. /TASS/. Colombian President Gustavo Petro believes the arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) is justified, and suggested that the US help carry it out.
"This is a logical decision. Netanyahu is [guilty of] genocide," the president wrote on his X social media account. "If [US President Joe] Biden ignores this decision, he will only lead the world toward barbarism. Western Europe must reclaim its independence in global politics and act in accordance with the court's ruling."
Earlier on Thursday, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Palestine. The ICC also demanded the arrest of Mohammed Deif, commander of a military branch of the Palestinian Hamas movement. Meanwhile, in August, the Israeli army reported that Deif had been eliminated in an Israeli strike on the town of Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip on July 13.
Last October, Colombia's government decided to recall its ambassador to Israel for consultations due to the military operation in the Gaza Strip. President Gustavo Petro said that strikes on the enclave and its blockade are causing death and destruction on the scale of the Nazi suppression of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943. Israeli authorities summoned Colombian Ambassador Margarita Manjarres to their foreign ministry for a meeting, viewing Petro's remarks as "anti-Semitic." In early May, Bogota cut off diplomatic relations with Israel.
