WASHINGTON, November 20. /TASS/. The United States is not going to speculate on who might be responsible for the recent rupture of undersea telecommunication cables in the Baltic Sea, pending the results of national investigations, Spokesperson for the United States Department of State Matthew Miller told reporters.

When asked whether the United States viewed the incident as Russia’s alleged "hybrid warfare," the spokesman replied that Washington was "incredibly concerned" by Russia’s alleged actions "both in Europe and around the world."

"When it comes to this specific incident, we've seen these reports," he continued. "It is our understanding that a number of the countries in question have announced investigations into the matter, and we'll, of course, wait for the outcome of those investigations before speaking to them specifically," Miller added.

Earlier, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, said after a meeting of the EU defense ministers, that Brussels cannot attribute these incidents to anyone. He also stopped short of connecting them to the decision to authorize the use of Western weapons for Kiev’s strategic-depth strikes on Russia.

Two underwater cables were damaged in the Baltic Sea on November 17 and 18. One connected Germany and Finland, and the other Sweden and Lithuania. The first cable runs along the Nord Stream pipeline. Its failure was reported by the Finnish government-owned telecom operator Cinia. According to the company, the repair of the cable could take from 5 to 15 days. The German and Finnish foreign ministries in a joint statement on Monday expressed concern over the damage and said a thorough investigation was underway. The damage to the second cable was later reported by the Swedish telecom company Telia.
