Trump to fundamentally rethink US policy on Ukraine conflict, says Iranian expert
Serious differences of opinion may arise between Washington and other NATO members regarding support for the Kiev regime, Mehdi Seif Tabrizi noted
MOSCOW, November 15. /TASS/. US President-elect Donald Trump may not be able to quickly end the Ukraine conflict, but fundamental changes in the US approach to the crisis are expected during his presidency, Iranian political scientist Professor Mehdi Seif Tabrizi told TASS.
"Significant changes in the American perspective on the European crisis are likely during the Trump administration. The US will no longer allocate major funds to finance the Ukrainian conflict as the Biden administration did; instead, it will focus on addressing domestic issues," he said. Serious differences of opinion may arise between Washington and other NATO members regarding support for the Kiev regime, the expert added.
"One should not be overly optimistic about the prospects for a swift ceasefire in Ukraine or European countries agreeing to it under Trump. However, once he takes office, it is possible that the escalation of the war, particularly allowing Ukraine to use longer-range weapons, may be avoided," he explained.
On September 12, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized that without Western support, Ukraine would be unable to carry out deep strikes inside Russia, as it lacks the necessary satellite intelligence and flight capabilities. The Russian leader noted that NATO countries are not just debating the potential use of Western long-range weapons by the Kiev regime but are also considering whether to directly intervene in the conflict.
Trump defeated Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in the November 5 election. The Republicans also gained control of the Senate. His inauguration is scheduled for January 20, 2025. During his campaign, Trump pledged to end the Ukraine crisis, though no specific plans or initiatives were made public.
Earlier, the Russian president outlined the conditions for resolving the situation in Ukraine, including the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbass and Novorossiya, and Ukraine renouncing its NATO membership ambitions. Moscow also insists that all Western sanctions on Russia be lifted and that Ukraine’s non-alignment and non-nuclear status be guaranteed.
