Kiev receives $1.35 bln grant from US — Ukrainian Prime Minister
According to Denis Shmygal, the American government sent the funds through the U.S. Agency for International Development
MOSCOW, November 13. /TASS/. Kiev has received a $1.35 billion grant from Washington and intends to continue working with Western partners to "mobilize financial resources," Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal announced.
"Ukraine has received a $1.35 billion grant from the United States. We are directing these funds to priority humanitarian and social programs," he wrote on his Telegram channel.
According to him, the American government sent the funds through the U.S. Agency for International Development.
"Our government continues to work with allies to mobilize the required financial resources this year and next," Shmygal concluded.
Earlier, Politico reported that the outgoing administration of American leader Joe Biden plans to send Ukraine the $6 billion allocated by Congress for Kiev as soon as possible in order to do so before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.
On November 10, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan confirmed the Biden administration's intention to use the remaining $6 billion. He also said that Biden would try to convince Trump not to refuse to continue aid to Ukraine during his remaining days in office.
The Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian parliament, has already considered Biden's attempts to speed up the provision of aid as an alarming signal, meaning that the situation could deteriorate sharply after Trump's inauguration.
Kiev has repeatedly stated that the country can only independently cover military budget items, while everything else is financed through aid from allies. The government has submitted to the Rada a draft budget for 2025, which includes a deficit of 1.6 trillion hryvnia ($38.68 billion). Meanwhile, Western partners strongly recommend that Kiev find more sources to increase its self-financing capacity.
