Abkhaz opposition rejects government’s terms for unblocking bridges in Sukhum
The oppositionist criticized the detentions as illegitimate
SUKHUM, November 12. /TASS/. Opposition activists in Abkhazia, who blocked a number of bridges leading to Sukhum last night, have rejected the government terms for restoring traffic, Temur Gulia, who heads the Aruaa war veterans organization, told TASS.
"Some government officials have visited here, but the people rejected their proposals," Gulia said. Namely, the officials promised to release detained Abkhaz citizens in the next few days if the bridges are unblocked.
The oppositionist criticized the detentions as illegitimate. "We heard the officials themselves saying that <…> hooligans have been detained. But we know that hooligans are not detained like terrorists," Gulia said. "This (blocking of the bridges - TASS) was a last resort. Unfortunately, we had to do that," he added.
Earlier, the opposition in Abkhazia blocked all three bridges leading to the capital Sukhum. After reopening the bridge across the Kodor River, the opposition insisted the other two bridges, across the Gumista, remain blocked unless the authorities agree to release detained opposition figures.
