Iran sees Trump's victory as opportunity for stronger nuclear agreement — media
The sources added that Iranian authorities have been preparing for Donald Trump's potential second term for several months and have established an unofficial working group
NEW YORK, November 12. /TASS/. Iranian authorities believe that a new agreement with the United States on the nuclear program will be stronger and more durable in the wake of Donald Trump's victory, if concluded, The New York Times (NYT) reported, citing Iranian officials.
According to them, Donald Trump's victory in the US election presents "an opportunity to make a lasting deal" with the United States.
The sources added that Iranian authorities have been preparing for Trump's potential second term for several months and have established an unofficial working group. However, they noted that despite their willingness to cooperate with Washington, much will depend on who Trump appoints as Secretary of State.
Previously, President of the Islamic Republic Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Iran is not seeking to develop nuclear weapons and, on the contrary, is ready to fully return to fulfilling its obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Iran has repeatedly emphasized that a fatwa by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei declares the production of nuclear weapons to be against Islam. Iranian politicians cite this fatwa as evidence of the exclusively peaceful nature of the national nuclear program.
The JCPOA was signed in 2015 by Iran and a group of international intermediaries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, China, Russia, the United States, and France. The signing of this agreement marked the end of a crisis that began in 2004, when Western countries accused Iran of developing nuclear weapons and imposed sanctions. In 2018, President Donald Trump decided to withdraw the United States from the agreement.
