Trump’s proposed peace plan for Ukraine sparks alarm in Kiev — newspaper
According to Corriere della Sera, the demilitarized zone could be patrolled by European troops, who would also be assigned the task of defending Ukraine, with US weapons supplies continuing
ROME, November 8. /TASS/. The peace plan for Ukraine attributed to Donald Trump’s team by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has caused concern in Kiev, Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper reported.
Although Trump’s plan for resolving the conflict in Ukraine has not yet been officially revealed, speaking at the European Political Community Summit in Budapest, Vladimir Zelensky expressed doubt about Trump’s promise to bring about peace virtually overnight, the newspaper noted. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed willingness to speak with Trump directly.
Earlier, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump, who won the US presidential election, and his team had crafted a plan to resolve the conflict in Ukraine by establishing a 1,300-kilometer-long demilitarized zone along the current battlefront. However, the United States would not send peacekeepers to the region. Under this proposal, Ukraine would be obliged to refrain from seeking NATO membership for at least 20 years. In return, Washington would continue supplying Kiev with weapons to prevent potential conflict resurgence.
According to Corriere della Sera, the demilitarized zone could be patrolled by European troops, who would also be assigned the task of defending Ukraine, with US weapons supplies continuing.
Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov has dismissed the WSJ article as purely speculative.
Speaking at Thursday’s plenary session of the Valdai Discussion Club, Putin congratulated Trump on winning the presidential election, adding that he saw nothing wrong with calling Trump. The latter, however, told NBC that he had not yet spoken with the Russian leader but believed such a call was highly likely.
