Threat of terrorism spreading in Central Asia persists — CSTO chief
Imangali Tasmagambetov also noted that the organization continues to monitor challenges and threats stemming from the Afghan hub
MOSCOW, November 7. /TASS/. The threat of terrorism spreading in the Central Asian Region remains, but the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) continues to maintain control, CSTO Secretary-General Imangali Tasmagambetov stated at a meeting of CIS security council secretaries in Moscow.
"The threat of terrorist activity, illegal immigration, and the trafficking of weapons and drugs in the Central Asian region remains," he said. "Despite the severity of these issues, we are able to maintain control within this area of CSTO's responsibility," he said.
The secretary-general noted that the organization continues to monitor challenges and threats stemming from the Afghan hub and coordinates efforts to address them through the CSTO Foreign Ministers Council's working group on Afghanistan. Representatives from the CIS Anti-Terrorism Center and the CIS Border Troops Commanders Council's coordination service also participate in these efforts.
