Strengthening security across Eurasia vital for CIS — secretary general
The latest geopolitical changes may warrant a more active dialogue between the existing multilateral agencies, Sergey Lebedev added
MOSCOW, November 7. /TASS/. The collapse of the global security system necessitates efforts to strengthen collective and national security within the Commonwealth of Independent States, CIS Secretary General Sergey Lebedev said, addressing a meeting of the CIS security council secretaries in Moscow.
"We have to state today that the post-WWII global security system can no longer cope with today’s challenges," he said. "Therefore, strengthening national and collective security in the CIS and across Eurasia has been a vital necessity for our countries. So far, an entire set of treaties, agreements and models has been accumulated at the Commonwealth to regulate relations between member countries and harmonize their legislations in this sphere," he continued.
The latest geopolitical changes may warrant a more active dialogue between the existing multilateral agencies, Lebedev added. "In this light, we have been increasing cooperation at the CIS, the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization - TASS) and the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization - TASS)," he explained, saying that senior officials from those organizations have been keeping in touch on a regular basis. Lebedev recounted holding a regular trilateral meeting that he described as constructive to exchange opinions on military, economic and humanitarian issues in Moscow on October 9.
