WASHINGTON, November 6. /TASS/. Former US President and Republican candidate Donald Trump may become both the 45th and 47th head of state after the final vote count, which would make him the second US president to be elected after a break, following Democrat Grover Cleveland, who held office in the late 19th century.

According to Fox News estimates, Trump already has 277 electoral votes, with 270 votes needed to win. Previously, only Democrat Grover Cleveland, who held the presidency between 1885 and 1889, managed to be re-elected after taking a break. After failing to garner the necessary number of electoral votes to win in 1888, despite having a majority in the popular vote, he regained his position in the 1892 election, becoming the only president to have served two non-consecutive terms.

The US held its general election on November 5, with voters electing the president, one-third of the Senate, the entire House of Representatives, and governors in 11 states and two territories. Donald Trump ran for president as the Republican candidate, with Kamala Harris representing the Democratic Party. Trump served as the 45th US president from 2017 to 2021, losing to Joe Biden in the 2020 election. Harris has served as vice president since January 2021.
