EU expects substantive accession talks with Ukraine to start in January — FT

LONDON, June 25. /TASS/. Substantive negotiations on Ukraine’s EU membership are not expected to begin until 2025, even as accession talks will officially start later today, the Financial Times (FT) reported, citing European officials.
According to the officials, the Polish presidency starts on January 1, 2025, while Hungary may veto Ukraine’s accession negotiations in the latter half of 2024 as it takes over the rotating presidency of the bloc on July 1.

On Monday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban told the German Funke publishing group that Budapest considers the negotiations on Ukraine’s EU membership politically motivated as he pointed to a number of uncertainties. However, Orban said, Hungary will not block the process.
Earlier, all 27 EU countries approved the date for the start of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. They begin on Tuesday.
