Moldovan Constitutional Court approves initiation of referendum on EU accession
It is also proposed to add a paragraph to the basic law, which introduces "the priority of EU regulations over the contrary provisions of domestic laws"
CHISINAU, April 16. /TASS/. The Constitutional Court has upheld the legality of the initiative from Moldovan parliamentarians to initiate a referendum on the republic's accession to the European Union and amend the Constitution as necessary, the Court’s President Domnica Manole said.
"The initiative to revise the Constitution <...> is in line with the provisions of the basic law and can go to the parliament for approval," she added.
Under the document, proposed by the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity, the preamble of the Constitution is to be supplemented with the words "reaffirming the European identity of the people of the Republic of Moldova (RM) and the irreversibility of RM's European path, proclaiming integration into the European Union as a strategic goal of the RM."
It is also proposed to add a paragraph to the basic law, which introduces "the priority of EU regulations over the contrary provisions of domestic laws." It says that Moldova will join the EU constituent documents by passing a parliamentary organic law.
