Hamas denies report of progress in Cairo talks
It is reported that the negotiations also involve Qatar and the United States
LONDON, April 8. /TASS/. The Palestinian movement Hamas and Israel have not made any progress in the Gaza ceasefire talks that are taking place in the Egyptian capital of Cairo, a Hamas official told Reuters.
According to the media outlet, the negotiations also involve Qatar and the United States.
Earlier, Egypt’s Al-Qahira Al-Ihbariya TV channel reported, citing an official, that significant progress had been made at the Cairo talks. The official added that the parties had reached consensus on a number of major issues.
Hamas announced on April 7 that its delegation had met with head of Egypt's General Intelligence Directorate Abbas Kamel in Cairo. The movement's key demands include a complete ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip, free flow of humanitarian aid and launching reconstruction in the enclave, as well as a prisoner swap deal ensuring the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the Israeli hostages being held in Gaza.
Another round of talks on resolving the situation in Gaza is currently taking place in the Egyptian capital. An Egyptian source told Al-Qahira Al-Ihbariya on April 6 that the negotiations would bring together US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director William Burns, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Bin Jassim Al Thani and an Israeli delegation. Hamas is represented by a delegation led by Khalil al-Hayya, the movement’s deputy head in Gaza.
