Majority of Poles sympathize with protesting farmers, poll shows
A mere 10% of respondents said they opposed the demonstrations, while the others said they did not have an opinion on the matter
MOSCOW, March 26. /TASS/. A majority of Polish citizens support farmers who have recently been blocking roads and rallying across the country, a survey conducted by IBRiS for the Rzeczpospolita newspaper revealed.
While 72% of respondents said they supported the farmers, 51.6% of those surveyed expressed their "resolute" support, and 21.2% said they "fundamentally" approved of the protests.
A mere 10% of respondents said they opposed the demonstrations, while the others said they did not have an opinion on the matter.
"Supporting demonstrations [of farmers] has been a manifestation of the negative attitude toward the European green policies and a safe way to express anti-Ukrainian sentiment," IBRiS CEO Marcin Duma said, commenting on the poll results.
While the results may come as a surprise to residents of Warsaw and other Polish cities who have been seeing traffic jams amid farmers’ protests against cheap Ukrainian agricultural imports flooding the domestic Polish market, pollsters are not surprised as anti-Ukrainian sentiment has long been strong in Poland, the newspaper writes.
IBRiS conducted the poll among 1,067 adults across Poland on March 23-24.
