WMO expects COP29 conference in Baku to be successful — President

ABU DHABI, March 19. /TASS/. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) expects the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), which will take place on November 11-24 in Azerbaijan to be successful, WMO President Abdulla Al Mandous said in an interview for TASS First Deputy Director General Mikhail Gusman.
According to the official, the upcoming conference must become a continuation of the COP28, focusing on search for solutions that would make it possible to keep the growth of the average annual temperature under 1.5 degrees, as stipulated by the Paris agreement.
"We expect COP29 in Baku to be successful," Al Mandous added.
The previous conference, COP28, took place in Dubai in the end of the last year. During one plenary meeting, the management body approved the decision to hold the next conference in Azerbaijan.
Baku required the support of the Eastern European group of COP28 participants for its application to get approved. During the meeting of a regional bloc that took part within the conference, the countries endorsed Azerbaijan’s candidacy. Earlier, Armenia withdrew its candidacy in favor of Azerbaijan’s.
