Brazil’s G20 sherpa doesn’t see group as platform for Ukraine talks
"Brazil insists that peace and security issues should be dealt with by the UN" as the most appropriate platform to do so, Mauricio Lyrio said
WASHINGTON, March 14. /TASS/. The Group of 20 will not be a platform for talks on the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, but it will help communicate the idea that it is necessary to achieve peace, Mauricio Lyrio, Brazil’s sherpa at the group, said at an event at Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington.
"I don't think the G20 is a forum for negotiations on these processes, but at the same time it will help communicate the right message," he said in response to a question from TASS. "In the case of Brazil, which has supported negotiations on peace in Ukraine all along, it is the same message we want to communicate within the G20 as well."
"Brazil insists that peace and security issues should be dealt with by the UN" as the most appropriate platform to do so, Lyrio continued to say.
"At the same time, within the G20, we would like to convey the message <...> that we need progress in peace talks. We have been saying this from the very beginning," he stated.
Brazil is holding the presidency of the G20 starting from December 1, 2023. The group will hold its concluding summit of the year 2024 in Rio de Janeiro from November 18-19.
