Escalation in Ukraine conflict meets nobody’s interests, Chinese diplomat says
"China is ready to support jointly with Germany the idea of convening a peace conference in due time, given equal involvement of all parties, in order to pave the way for a ceasefire as soon as possible and put an end to the hostilities," Li Hui said
BEIJING, March 11. /TASS/. Further escalation in the Ukraine crisis does not correspond to interests of the international community, Chinese Special Representative for Eurasian Affairs Li Hui told Thomas Bagger, State Secretary of Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, at a meeting in Berlin.
"The conflict and confrontation risk further escalation and do not meet common interests of the international community, including China and Germany," the Chinese Foreign Ministry quoted him Li as saying. "China is ready to support jointly with Germany the idea of convening a peace conference in due time, given equal involvement of all parties, in order to pave the way for a ceasefire as soon as possible and put an end to the hostilities," the Chinese diplomat added.
He told Bagger about the past week’s mediation toward a consensus between Russia, Ukraine and European countries.
Li has been on an tour of European countries to contribute to resolving the Ukraine crisis since March 2. He first visited Russia, and later travelled to the EU headquarters, Poland and Ukraine. He is also expected to visit France. During the first round of shuttle diplomacy last May, Li held meetings with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, some European diplomats and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
