China seeking to 'build bridges' for talks on Ukraine settlement, special envoy says
Mao Ning also stressed that China was ready to continue playing a special role in resolving the crisis in Ukraine
BEIJING, February 29. /TASS/. Chinese Special Representative for Eurasian Affairs Li Hui will work "to build bridges" for peace talks on Ukraine during his visit to Moscow on March 3, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said at a briefing.
"China believes that prolonging the Ukraine crisis is not in the international community’s interest. This is why the goal of the current ‘shuttle-diplomacy’ efforts is to reach a consensus on [resolving] the conflict and build bridges to hold peace talks," she pointed out.
Mao also stressed that China was ready to continue playing a special role in resolving the crisis in Ukraine.
On May 15-26, 2023, Li Hui visited Kiev, Warsaw, Paris, Berlin, Brussels and Moscow to discuss the Ukraine conflict. During the trip, he met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and diplomats from the counties on his itinerary, including Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Li served as China’s deputy foreign minister in 2008-2009 and as China’s ambassador to Russia in 2009-2019.
