Presidential election campaign kicks off in Azerbaijan
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on December 7, designating February 7, 2024 as the date for the country’s snap presidential election
BAKU, January 15. /TASS/. The presidential election campaign is starting in Azerbaijan.
"According to the republic’s election legislation, the election campaign begins 23 days before the voting day slated for February 7, that is, on January 15, and will conclude 24 hours before the election," Azerbaijan’s Election Committee said.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on December 7, designating February 7, 2024 as the date for the country’s snap presidential election. The next scheduled election was supposed to take place in October 2025. In an interview with local TV channels, Aliyev said that the main reason to hold an extraordinary presidential election was the complete restoration of the country’s sovereignty following the September 19-20 anti-terrorist operation in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Under Azerbaijan’s current constitution, the president is elected for seven years and can serve for an unlimited number of terms. Azerbaijan held its last presidential vote in April 2018.
