Borrell to visit Beirut to discuss preventing escalation in south Lebanon

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy will travel to Beirut on January 5-7

BEIRUT, January 5. /TASS/. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell will travel to Beirut on January 5-7 to discuss the situation in southern Lebanon and in the Gaza Strip, a press release of the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon said.

Borrell will meet with Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Abdallah Bou Habib and Lebanese Armed Forces Commander General Joseph Aoun, as well as with Head of Mission and Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) General Aroldo Lazaro.

"The mission will be an occasion to discuss all aspects of the situation in and around Gaza, including its impact on the region, especially the situation at the Israeli-Lebanese border," the statement reads. According to it, Borrell "will re-emphasize the need to advance diplomatic efforts with regional leaders with a view to creating the conditions to reach a just and lasting peace between Israel, Palestine and in the region.".
