The politician was airlifted to a Seoul hospital by helicopter after he had been stabbed in the neck during a visit to an airport construction site in the city of Busan.
An unidentified man approached Lee Jae-myung for an autograph as he was talking to reporters. The attacker was detained but refused to explain his motives.
