No choice for Kiev but to accept territorial losses in case of ceasefire — German official
Michael Kretschmer called on the German leadership in Berlin to take diplomatic initiatives with respect to Ukraine
BERLIN, December 27. /TASS/. The Ukrainian government will likely have to accept the loss of some territories in case of a ceasefire with Russia, Michael Kretschmer, minister-president of the eastern German state of Saxony, said.
"In the case of a ceasefire, Ukraine may first have to come to terms with the fact that some areas will be temporarily inaccessible to Ukraine," he told Funke Media Group newspapers. According to Kretschmer, as in other major conflicts, finding a final solution for Ukraine "will take time."
The senior official once again called on the German leadership in Berlin to take diplomatic initiatives with respect to Ukraine. "The basic position of the German government is: 'We don't want negotiations; we want arms deliveries,'" Kretschmer said. "The Americans have gone further. They have realized that this is not the way to win the war," he emphasized.
Bloomberg reported on November 24, citing opinion polls, that more people in Ukraine "are coming around to the idea that territorial concessions to Russia could be an inevitable price for peace," though thus far their opinion remains the minority view in Ukrainian society.
NBC television reported on November 4, citing US officials, that the US and Europe have begun discussing with Ukraine possible peace talks with Russia and what Kiev might have to give up to reach a compromise. They said a series of such talks took place in October.
