Serbian opposition wraps up rally near Justice Ministry in Belgrade
The demonstrators marched to the ministry from the Republican Election Commission
BELGRADE, December 26. /TASS/. Serbian opposition has wrapped up a rally of about 1,000 people near the Justice Ministry in Belgrade, according to a TASS reporter at the scene.
Opposition lawmaker Srdjan Milivojevic urged the protesters to reconvene at noon on Wednesday.
The demonstrators marched to the ministry from the Republican Election Commission. Near the ministry, they yelled demands for the immediate release of all those who were detained during the attempt to break into the Belgrade City Hall on December 24.
At the end of the rally, Milivojevic called on the audience to attend a rally of the student movement called Borba, which is set to take place near the Philosophy Department of Belgrade University. This movement supports the demands of the Serbia Against Violence alliance.
The Serbia Against Violence alliance asserts that the country’s parliamentary and municipal elections that were held on December 17 were rigged. The opposition started a series of rallies near the Republican Election Commission on December 18. The riots were dispersed by the police, who detained 38 people. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic described the attempt to seize the Belgrade City Hall as an attack on the country’s sovereignty, while Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said that Moscow had warned Belgrade about potential unrest.
The election commission decided to hold a re-run of the election at 28 polling stations on December 30. Serbia Against Violence refused to take part. Opposition activists announced a large protest in Belgrade on the day of the re-run.
