The US military can now be permanently stationed at three Danish airfields: Karup, Skrydstrup and Aalborg

STOCKHOLM, December 19. /TASS/. The US and Denmark have signed an agreement on bilateral military cooperation, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said at a press conference broadcast by TV2.

"The US and NATO are the guarantors of Denmark's security; this has been the case since World War II, and it will continue to be the case in the future," she said. "The agreement marks a new breakthrough. It means that US soldiers and equipment can be permanently stationed on Danish land."

The US military can now be permanently stationed at three Danish airfields: Karup, Skrydstrup and Aalborg.

The new treaty with the US does not change Copenhagen's policy regarding the storage of nuclear weapons on Danish territory, Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen explained. He added that "all operations must be conducted in coordination with Danish defense" and in accordance with Danish law and sovereignty.

The treaty does not cover Greenland and the Faroes; the US will not have access to the islands.

The US-Danish agreement must still be approved by the Danish parliament.
