Ukraine's accession to EU threatens France's farming sector — National Rally head
According to Jordan Bardella, a bigger EU would not be in the best interests of its members
PARIS, December 19. /TASS/. Head of the French National Rally party Jordan Bardella opposes Ukraine's admission to the EU as its membership poses a threat to France's farming industry, he told the France Inter radio station.
"I do not support Ukraine's admission to the EU," he noted. "Ukraine is an agrarian country, and its accession to the EU would make it the main recipient of subsidies, which would significantly weaken France's agricultural sovereignty."
According to Bardella, a bigger EU would not be in the best interests of its members. "I oppose any enlargement of the EU. Accepting new members would weaken the states that founded this community," the politician said.
Following the first day of the EU summit held in Brussels on December 14-15, the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, said that the EU’s member states had decided to start accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova. The summit participants also announced that Georgia was granted candidate status and promised to return in March 2024 to the issue of starting accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina if it fully meets all the criteria for accession by then.
