G20 summit to be 'incomplete' without Putin — Brazilian presidential adviser
Celso Amorim added that it is impossible to ignore Russia, so it is necessary to figure something out
BUENOS AIRES, December 18. /TASS/. The G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro in November 2024 will be "incomplete" without the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Brazilian President's Special Representative for International Affairs Celso Amorim said in an interview with the UOL news portal.
"We want Putin to come. A G20 conference without Russia is an incomplete conference. <...> The absence [of Russia] goes against the interests of the G20," the portal quoted him as saying. Amorim added that it is impossible to ignore Russia, so it is necessary to figure something out.
Earlier, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said that Brazilian authorities would invite the Russian president to the G20 summit despite the International Criminal Court's (ICC) arrest warrant for Putin. Brazil currently holds the G20 presidency.
The G20 consists of Argentina, Australia, the African Union, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, the European Union, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Republic of Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
